What to Expect at Your First Visit to an Oral Surgeon

Your first appointment is designed to help us understand your needs, explain your treatment options, and make sure you feel informed and comfortable moving forward. Here's what typically happens:

1. Medical & Dental History Review

We’ll begin by discussing your medical and dental background, including any medications, allergies, and previous treatments. This helps us plan care that is safe and tailored to you.

2. Discussion of Your Concerns

You’ll have the opportunity to explain your symptoms, the reason for your referral, or any questions you may have about your mouth, teeth, jaw, or upcoming procedure.

3. Clinical Examination

The surgeon will carry out a thorough examination of the relevant area—this may include your teeth, gums, jaw joints, soft tissues, or any site of concern.

4. Imaging (X-rays or 3D Scans)

If needed, we may take additional imaging such as an OPG or CBCT scan to get a detailed view of the area. These images help guide diagnosis and treatment planning with precision.

5. Diagnosis & Treatment Options

Your surgeon will explain what they’ve found and outline any recommended treatments. This may include surgical and non-surgical options, expected outcomes, risks, and benefits.

6. Sedation & Anaesthesia Planning

If your procedure requires local anaesthetic, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia, we’ll discuss which option is most suitable and answer any questions about comfort and safety.

7. Questions & Next Steps

You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions.
