Before Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Before Intravenous (IV) Sedation

  • Do not eat for four hours before your appointment. You may have small sips of water if needed.

  • A responsible adult must come with you, take you home by car or taxi, and stay with you for four hours after the procedure.

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 12 hours after sedation.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing, with sleeves that can roll above the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.

  • Please avoid smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. If possible, stopping two weeks prior gives the same benefits as a non-smoker.

  • On the day of surgery, do not wear lipstick, heavy makeup, or nail polish, as these can interfere with monitoring equipment.

  • If you are unwell (e.g. cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset), please contact the office. In most cases, sedation can still proceed.

  • Tell us about all medications you are taking, especially sleeping tablets, tranquillisers, or steroids, as these may interact with sedation.

  • Do not use recreational drugs, party pills, or alcohol the day before your appointment.
