After Tooth Extraction

After Tooth Extraction

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot needs to form to stop bleeding and start healing. This is why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after your appointment.

If bleeding or oozing continues, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may need to repeat this a few times.

Once the clot has formed, it’s important not to disturb it, as this can delay healing. For the first 72 hours, avoid:

  • Vigorous rinsing

  • Drinking through straws

  • Smoking or alcohol

  • Brushing directly next to the extraction site

Please also avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, as this can increase bleeding.

Some pain and swelling are normal. Applying an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas) to the area can help reduce swelling. Take pain relief as prescribed. Swelling usually improves within 48 hours.

Use all medications as directed. If antibiotics are prescribed, finish the full course, even if you feel better. Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of extraction. Return to a normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable.

After 24 hours, resume your normal oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing at least once daily. This helps keep your mouth clean and supports healing.

Most people feel much better after a few days and can return to normal activities. Contact us immediately if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling that lasts longer than 2–3 days, or a reaction to medication.
